The ethylene glycol-containing silica precursor has been combined, as mentioned above, with most commercially important polysaccharides and two proteins listed in Table 3.1. In spite of the wide variety of their nature, structure and properties, the jellification processes on addition of THEOS to solutions of all of these biopolymers (Scheme 3.2) had a common feature, that is the formation of monolithic nanocomposite materials, proceeding without phase separation and precipitation. The syner-esis mentioned in a number of cases in Table 3.1 was not more than 10 vol.%. It is worthwhile to compare it with common sol-gel processes. Studies of UV curable adhesive show how an adhesive may be obtained which has a low thermal expansion coefficient and low shrinkage. Figure 19.3 compares adhesives with performance requirements. Most material studies reported in medical journals are of interest to those involved in mainstream plastic applications. Some medical plastics must perform under constant water immersion. It was reported that absorption of 1 % water reduces the fatigue life of PMMA by a factor of four, since bone cement can only be replaced by a surgical operation such a performance is clearly unacceptable. The use of silane to treat the hydroxyapatite filler in this material reduced water uptake. The water uptake increased with increased concentration of hydroxyapatite. In applications, such as dental fillings, increased water uptake is considered helpful since it compensates for the loss of volume due to shrinkage of the filling during curing. [Pg.805]

At the present time, most of the work is centered on the development of silicon carbide and silicon-nitride powders. Polysilanes are the basic precursor for the synthesis of silicon carbide from sol-gel. This was first achieved by the conversion of polydimethyl silane through a carbosilane intermediate. However this silane has poor solubility and low char yield and considerable shrinkage occurs during conversion to the final product. Precursors are being developed with a much larger SiC yield notably those based on trifiinctional alkoxides and chlorosilanes.
