Shrinkage of adhesive

Each of the above four factors has a strong influence on the joint performance. Therefore, the joint must be designed to eliminate stress concentrations, which are not always apparent and may occur as a result of differential thermal expansion of adhesive-adherend, and shrinkage of adhesive on curing. Air can also become entrapped at the interface if the adhesive does not flow easily during curing or does not wet the substrate. The types of stress found in adhesive j oints are compression, shear, tension, peel, and cleavage (see Fig. [Pg.546]

The most common problem in the paint layers, which can have a wide variety of causes, is loss of adhesion. Upon drying of the medium, the paint layers develop shrinkage cracks. In itself, this is not a particularly worrisome phenomenon, but, if through any cause the adhesion between paint layers and ground or between ground and support is lost, the paint begins to flake. First the flakes cud up, and finally become completely detached and lost. [Pg.427]

Lack of adhesion of a dental restoration to tooth structure results in microleakage at tooth-restoration interface. This occurrence can result in discoloration at the margin of the restoration, or in the formation of caries. Occlusal forces on the restoration and differences between the coeffidents of thermal expansion of the cement and tooth material can lead to leakage. In addition, oral fluids and moisture may affect the adhesion. Microleakage of composite resin restorations has been reviewed by Ben-Amar [233]. Microleakage is not as serious a problem with glass-ionomer cements as it is with resin-based restorative materials, due to reduced polymerization shrinkage [234]. [Pg.22]

Since nonreactive diluents do not enter into the crosslinking reaction, they can be lost due to volatilization, especially when exposed to the elevated temperatures of the exotherm or curing cycle. If vaporization does occur, shrinkage of the adhesive film can result in internal stresses being generated within the joint. These internal stresses reduce the degree of adhesion that is realized on final cure. [Pg.118]

The influence of parameters such as crosslinking agent aluminium acetylacetonate content, introduction time of monomers, amount of reactor charge, distribution of N-vinyl caprolactam (VC), diverse crosslinkers, viscosity and molar mass of the synthesised pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) and solvent balance and transfer agent kind and content on such important parameters of PS A as shrinkage, plasticity, adhesion to steel and deformation are examined. Synthesised pressure-sensitive adhesives based on acrylic polymers and containing 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA), methyl acrylate (MA), acrylic acid (AA) and VC are used for production of self-adhesives containing PVC carrier. 4 refs. [Pg.94]
