Shrinkage analysis

As reviewed in the section on CIIM and included as CSE in Fig. 2-16, there is a computerized shrinkage analysis program (112). This program takes into account processing variables that affect shrinkage (Table 2-10). To do the job, it is designed as part of the total molding concept (TMConcept).

The oil and gas samples are taken from the appropriate flowlines of the same separator, whose pressure, temperature and flowrate must be carefully recorded to allow the recombination ratios to be calculated. In addition the pressure and temperature of the stock tank must be recorded to be able to later calculate the shrinkage of oil from the point at which it is sampled and the stock tank. The oil and gas samples are sent separately to the laboratory where they are recombined before PVT analysis is performed. A quality check on the sampling technique is that the bubble point of the recombined sample at the temperature of the separator from which the samples were taken should be equal to the separator pressure. 

Thermal-mechanical analysis (TMA) has proven a more reproducible measure of melt integrity [20]. The TMA test involves measuring the shape change of a separator under load while the temperature is linearly increased. Typically, separators show some shrinkage, then start to elongate, and finally break (see Fig. 5). 

Computer-aided flow-simulation programs are also available for dies. All the programs can successfully predict a certain amount of shrinkage under specific conditions that can be applied to experience. The actual shrinkage is finally determined after molding or extruding the products. When not in spec process control changes can meet the requirements unless some drastic error had been included in the analysis. 

Shrinkage during sintering at high T can be determined experimentally by dilatometry, electrical conductivity, acoustic waves or thermal analysis . 

Characterization of the samples by TGA and CHN analysis shows that the template was effectively removed (C < 0.2 wt%). Small-angle X-ray scattering data of the calcined solid shows a reduction in the unit cell due to thermal shrinkage, while the values for the Fenton samples coincide with the starting precursor. Our approach therefore completely preserves the unit cell corresponding to the diameter of the micelles contained in the mesophase.

An account of the mechanism for creep in solids placed under a compressive hydrostatic stress which involves atom-vacancy diffusion only is considered in Nabarro and Herring s (1950) volume diffusion model. The counter-movement of atoms and vacancies tends to relieve the effects of applied pressure, causing extension normal to the applied stress, and shrinkage in the direction of the applied stress, as might be anticipated from Le Chatelier s principle.
