Short fiber suspensions

The second model used by Letwimolnun et al. [2007] is an extension of that used by Sepehr et al. [2004] for short fiber suspensions. A hydrodynamic diffusive term related to the Brownian motion, Dr, was added to the diffusive term of the Folgar and Tucker [1984] equation Dr = Cj + Dr in... [Pg.679]

Analysis of the final properties of injection-molded short-fiber composite parts requires accurate prediction of flow-induced fiber orientation. Several different fiber suspension theories and numerical methods are available for the calculation of the motion of fibers during flow. Only the works of Folgar and Tucker and Fan are briefly reviewed here since they are the most relevant. The reader is referred to Phan-Thien and Zheng for additional information for other constitutive theories of fiber suspensions. In what follows we assume the fibers are rigid rods of circular cross section. [Pg.582]

For pulp manufacture, the PPTA yarn is chopped into short fibers, which are then suspended in water. The suspension passes through a refiner mill similar to the kind used in paper manufacture from wood pulp. In the mill aramid fibers are chopped even further, whereby the cutting action of the rotors gives rise to a random distribution of fiber length. At the same time, some crystalline domains partially detach themselves from the main... [Pg.256]

Screening is defined as the separation of debris from the fibers in a suspension. As a principle the fiber fractions in the accept and reject should be the same as in the inlet In contrast to that, fractionation aims to separating certain fractions of fibers, for instance long fibers from short fibers. The mass flow split in screening is about 5-25%, in fractionation higher, 30-40%, due to the production requirements. [Pg.167]

In selecting cloths made from synthetic materials, one must account for the fact that staple cloths provide a good retentivity of solid particles due to the short hairs on their surface. However, cake removal is often difficult from these cloths - more than from cloths of polyfilament and, especially, monofilament fibers. The type of fiber weave and pore size determine the degree of retentivity and permeability. The objective of the process, and the properties of particles, suspension and cake should be accounted for. The cloth selected in this maimer should be confirmed or corrected by laboratory tests. Such tests can be performed on a single filter. These tests, however, provide no information on progressive pore plugging and cloth wear. However, they do provide indications of expected filtrate pureness, capacity and final cake wetness. [Pg.151]
