The 1993 prices and values of fertilizer products consumed in the United States are summarized in Table 16. The prices given are fob production sites or principal terminals thus costs to farmers are greater by virtue of shipping and handling costs and local dealer profits. 

Storage, Shipping, and Handling. Phosphoms pentachloride is in the EPA extreme ha2ardous substance Hst. It is treated as a dammable sohd, and containers in which it is stored or shipped must be affixed with a yellow acid label DOT UN No. 1806. In general, the pentachloride should be handled with the same precautions that are used with the trichloride. Protective clothing should be worn by workers handling the pentachloride and gas masks should be used when personnel are exposed to the vapors.

Sulfur shipped as a soHd frequentiy becomes contaminated with dirt and scale during shipping and handling. In areas of the world where soHd sulfur is stiU handled, molten sulfur is frequentiy filtered prior to use as an alternative to, or in combination with, hot gas purification. Since the eady 1970s, most sulfur used in the United States and Europe has been shipped and handled as a Hquid containing very low ash concentrations, typically <0.005%. Using this type of raw material, neither sulfur filtration nor hot gas purification are essential, and are rarely used. 

The absorption of SO for oleum production is carried out over a relatively narrow temperature range. The upper temperature is set to provide a reasonable partial pressure driving force for the oleum concentration used. The lower practical temperature limit is the freezing point of oleums, which is high enough to be a problem in shipping and handling as well. For some oleum uses it is practical to add small amounts of HNO as an antifreeze (100). 

Mercury thermometers are subject to separation of the mercury column or to inclusion of bubbles of the fiU gas. These may result from shipping and handling and cause a scale offset which can usually be seen upon visual examination, and they are always recogni2ed by a 0°C verification check. Manufacturers will suggest means by which these temporary defects may be cured.

Properties and handling. The physical characteristics of MEK are similar to those of acetone. Its colorless, mobile, flammable, and sweet-smelling, if that s what you call a hospital smell. Its very soluble in water and most common organic solvents. There are only two grades commercially traded, technical (99%), and CP (99.95%). Shipping and handling are similar to acetone.
