Moreover, multivariate optimization, the simultaneous optimization of several properties, will increasingly come into focus. A drug should have high selectivity in binding to different receptors and minimal toxicity, good solubility and penetration, and so on. A hair color should have a brilliant shine, be absorbed well, not be washed out, not damage the hair, not be toxic, and be stable under sunlight, etc. [Pg.625]

Phenylacetylene. Support a 5-litre glass Dewar flask in a wooden case. Equip the flask with a lid of clear Perspex, provided with suitable apertures for a mechanical stirrer, introducing solids (e.g., sodium) or hquids, a calibrated dip stick for measuring the volume of liquid in the Dewar vessel, a gas mlet tube and an ammonia inlet arrange for an electric light to shine downwards into the flask. [Pg.900]

From radium called niton at first, L. nitens, shining) The element was discovered in 1900 by Dorn, who called it radium emanation. In 1908 Ramsay and Gray, who named it niton, isolated the element and determined its density, finding it to be the heaviest known gas. It is essentially inert and occupies the last place in the zero group of gases in the Periodic Table. Since 1923, it has been called radon. [Pg.152]

Modem furniture pohshes are designed for a wide variety of surfaces, eg, plastics, metals, and synthetic and natural resin coatings. Furniture pohshes impart shine and provide protection from abrasion, marring, and spills. The formulations clean weU in many cases. In common with most other pohshes, furniture pohshes are characterized by ease and speed of apphcation and of buffing, and by either the absence of objectionable odors or the addition of pleasing ones. [Pg.209]

One-step clean-and-shine products have become popular in the household market. These products are appHed to the floor with a sponge mop and their detergent action removes and suspends soil, which coUects on the mop and is removed when the mop is rinsed with water. The formulation, which remains on the floor, dries to a poHsh film. An earlier product of this type was dispensed from an aerosol as a foam. Formulas as of this writing (ca 1995) are appHed as Hquids (29,30). In one product, the dried film obtained from the formulation is soluble in the formulation, which includes low molecular weight, high acid polymers and a fairly large amount of ammonia (31). Repeated use does not contribute to a buildup of poHsh. [Pg.210]

Several cleaning formulations for specific uses contain unreacted polyamines. Examples include mixtures of ammonium alkylbenzenesulfonate, solvents, and PIP which give good cleaning and shine performance on mirrors and other hard surfaces without rinsing (305), and a hard-surface cleaner composed of a water-soluble vinyl acetate—vinyl alcohol copolymer, EDA, cyclohexanone [108-94-1] dimethyl sulfoxide [67-68-5] a surfactant, and water (306). TEPA, to which an average of 17 moles of ethylene oxide are added, improves the clay sod removal and sod antiredeposition properties of certain hquid laundry detergents (307). [Pg.48]

Naphthazarin (5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) [475-38-7] M 190.2, m 220-230°(dec), m 225-230°, pKEst(i) 9.5, pKEst(2) ll-l Red-brown needles with a green shine from EtOH. Also recrystd from hexane and purified by vacuum sublimation. [Huppert et al. J Phys Chem 89 5811 1985.] It is sparingly soluble in H2O but soluble in alkalis. It sublimes at 2-10mm. The diacetate forms golden yellow prisms from CHCI3, m 192-193° and the 5,8-dimethoxy derivative has m 157° (155°) (from pet ether) [Bruce and Thompson J Chem Soc 1089 7955 IR Schmand and Boldt J Am Chem Soc 97 447 1975 NMR Brockmann and Zeeck Chem Ber 101 4221 1968]. The monothiosemicarbazone has m 168°(dec) from EtOH [Gardner et al. J Am Chem Soc 74 2106 7952]. [Pg.305]

Figure 18.6 Diffraction of x-rays by a crystal, (a) When a beam of x-rays (red) shines on a crystal all atoms (green) in the crystal scatter x-rays in all directions. Most of these scattered x-rays cancel out, but in certain directions (blue arrow) they reinforce each other and add up to a diffracted beam, (b) Different sets of parallel planes can be arranged through the crystal so that each corner of all unit cells is on one of the planes of the set. The diagram shows in two dimensions three simple sets of parallel lines red, blue, and green. A similar effect is seen when driving past a plantation of regularly spaced trees. One sees the trees arranged in different sets of parallel rows. One now wonders whether these two phenomena are to be observed also for the whole two-dimensional surface of a crystal non-locking of the crystal surface in spite of lattice periodicity, and divergence of the fluctuation-induced thickening of the interface (or crystal surface), and in consequence the absence of facets. The last seems to contradict experience crystals almost by definition have their charm simply due to the beautifully shining facets which has made them jewelry objects since ancient times. [Pg.859]
