Joints in copper components may be a source of trouble. Copper/zinc brazing alloys may dezincify and consequently give rise to leaks . In some waters, soft solders are preferentially attacked unless in a proper capillary joint. Copper/phosphorus, copper/silver/phosphorus, and silver brazing alloys are normally satisfactory jointing materials. Excessive corrosion of copper is sometimes produced by condensates containing dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide. Rather severe corrosion sometimes occurs on the fire side of fire-back boilers and on electric heater element sheaths under scales deposited from hard waters . [Pg.700]

When specified, a removable steam heating element external to the oil reservoir or a thermostatically controlled electric immersion heater with a sheath of austenitic stainless steel shall be provided for heating the charge capacity of oil before start-up in cold weather. The heating device shall have sufficient capacity to heat the oil in the reservoir from the specified minimum site ambient temperature to the manufacturer s required start-up temperature within 12 hours. If an electric immersion heater is used, the watt density shall not exceed 2.33 watts per sq. cm (15 watts per sq. in.). [Pg.61]

Unrestricted local heating may be provided by portable electric radiators which plug into the socket outlets of the installation. Fixed heaters that are wall mounted or inset must be connected through a fused connection and incorporate a local switch, either on the heater itself or as a part of the fuse connecting unit. Heating appliances where the heating element can be touched must have a DP switch which disconnects all conductors. This requirement includes radiators which have an element inside a silica-glass sheath. [Pg.230]
