Later at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry I was joined by two research assistants, Yi De Xing and Yong Fan Zhou. As mentioned previously, there was as yet no efficient way to synthesize tribenzo[o,c,e]cyclooctene 25 (see Scheme 7). Furthermore, our research effort in the quest of the angle-strained alkyne 27 was halted at the last dehydrobromination step, from which only 28 and 29 were obtained (Scheme 7). The pen-H-H repulsion of the expected planar 27 was considered to be responsible for its instability. We reasoned that a planar derivative of 27, tailored to eliminate this unfavorable interaction, might sustain some degree... [Pg.118]

Cen at the Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry has recently published a synthesis of olanzapine (Scheme 7). The thiophene 22 was treated with 2-chloronitrobenzene m the presence of lithium hydroxide to give 23. Reduction of the nitro group and subsequent ring closure gave 24. Addition of piperazine to the amidine 24 followed by methylation provided olanzapine (2) in an overall yield of 29%. [Pg.98]

This catalytic epoxidation method has been applied to the synthesis of a variety of natural products, particularly polyhydioxylated compounds, including carbohydrates (54) and macrolides. In addition, this reaction has been used for commercial synthesis of disparlure, a gypsy moth pheromone [J. T. Baker Co. (55) and the Shanghai Institute for Organic Chemistry (56)], and more importantly, glycidol, a versatile intermediate for synthesis of /3-blockers and other functionalized chiral molecules (Arco Co.) (Scheme 23) (57). [Pg.274]
