The burden of proof now falls clearly, and heavily, on those who maintain that an awareness of dream content actually helps us. For example, I am enlightened by finding through recall of Dream no. 19 that my psychosexual conflicts with a former friend and his wife are still alive in my mind. But, even if my interpretation of this dream is correct, how does it help me to know this fact By making me aware that yes, after all, there is an unconscious, or that yes, after all, sexuality is polymorphous and ambiguous - that despite superficial appearances to the contrary, all is not entirely kosher in Hobson s unconscious mind. 

The onset of essential schizophrenia usually begins with the magnification of some umesolved conflict in the individual s life, perhaps a poor sexual adjustment or deficiencies in social relationships, which is apt to give rise to intense feelings of impotence, failure, or personal incompetence to the extent that self-concern may so overwhelm the personality that the schizophrenic becomes aware of little else. The schizophrenic syndrome may end at this point if the individual is successful in attaining some sort of personality reorganization and resolution of the precipitating conflict. 

The other great pillar in the edifice of artificial life was Aristotle s theory of sexual, as opposed to spontaneous, generation. Aristotle, as we have said, believed that every material substance must consist of matter and form. In the case of sexual generation, however, we encounter two substances that are at the extreme ends of the scale. Sperm is almost pure form, and menstrual blood is almost pure matter. The sperm in effect acts as the form to the matter supplied by the menstrual blood in order to produce a living being. When male semen enters the womb, a conflict arises between the sperm and the menstrual blood. As Aristotle says in The Generation of Animals (766b 15—18) ...
