As we ve di,seussed, system design is responsible for much of cavitation. Yet, the maintenanee mechanic is responsible for stopping and preventing eavitation. And certainly, it s the maintenance mechanic who has to deal with the results of cavitation, the constant changing of bearings, meehanical seals, damaged impellers, wear rings and other pump parts. [Pg.37]

Seuss Effect The lowering of the " C/C in atmospheric CO2 as a result of the burning of fossil fuels. [Pg.888]

The following information may be slightly exaggerated, but everyone I meet tells me that Dr. Seuss s To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street was rej ected 24 times. Silence of the Lambs 28 times, Catch-22 21 times, and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance more than 100 times. Twenty publishers felt that Richard Bach s Jonathan Livingston Seagull was for the birds. It went on to sell millions of copies around the world. [Pg.170]

Use of this vapor-phase deuterium exchange reaction between steam and hydrogen was proposed independently in 1941 by Harteck and co-workers in Germany and by Urey and co-workers in the United States as a means for recovering deuterium from electrolytic hydrogen. Harteck and Seuss [C3, G3] developed a supported nidcel catalyst that caused the... [Pg.751]

The equilibrium constant ka for the gas-liquid reaction has also been determined by a number of investigators. Results at several temperatures are given in Table 13.22. Data of Geib and Seuss have been computed from their equation for k given in Table 13.21 and their equation (13.146) fora ... [Pg.783]

Carbon can remain in the SOC pool for a long period after its assimilation by vegetation. This means that not all carbon in the SOC pool is in equilibrium with the isotopic composition of the modern atmosphere due to a decrease in the C value of the atmosphere as a result of fossil fuel burning since industrialization (Freidli et al, 1986 Bird et al, 1996). Old carbon will therefore be enriched by up to 1.5%o compared to recent carbon. This terrestrial Seuss effect needs to be considered when calculating the (S C value of CO2 respired to the atmosphere from the SOC pool (Fung et ai, 1997). [Pg.189]

At the regional/global level, there have been relatively few observational studies of variations in SOC S C value. Bird et al. (1996) demonstrated the existence of a latitudinal gradient in the d"C value of surface SOC in forest soils, with tropical forest soils having approximately l-1.5%o lower d C values than those of high-latitude forest soils. This was attributed to a temperature gradient in the turnover times for carbon in the soil (the terrestrial Seuss effect ) and possibly to a 0.5%o temperature effect (Bird and Pousai, 1997). [Pg.190]
