A second type of apparatus based on the pressure diffusion effect is the separation nozzle. Pressure gradients in a curved expanding jet produce an isotopic separation similar to that in a centrifuge. The separation effect obtained with a single jet is relatively small, and separation nozzle stages, similar to gaseous diffusion stages, must be used in a cascade to realize most of the desired separations. 

These filters are similar in configuration to a Nutsche filter, but instead of one filter plate there is a series of plates inside the vessel. The filtrate is pulled through the filter media in the center of each plate to a central pipe that discharges out the bottom of the devise. The bottom plate of the filter usually discharges its filtrate thought a separate nozzle. These filters are usually used with slurries where a smaller quantity of solids is to be collected.

The stripped 230°F BFW drains into the large deaerator drum. This drum simply provides residence time for the high-pressure BFW pumps, which supply water directly to the boilers. Recovered steam condensate, which should be air-free, is fed to this drum through a separate nozzle. 

Fused basalt is utilized chiefly in the manufacture of floor tiles, castings for cyclone and other separators, nozzles, augers and grate bars the centrifugal casting technology is used in the production of conveyor pipings for mines, mill corps, etc. A special case is represented by the application of fused basalt for the incorporation of radioactive wastes. Fused rocks are dealt with in the extensive series of studies by Voldan (1955 — -1976). 

Enrichment of the Sy-isotope from the 0.711% in natural uranium to ca. 4% can proceed by gas diffusion, with a gas centrifuge and with separation nozzles. The separation nozzle process is no longer important. Pure uranium(VI) fluoride is utilized.

In some isotope separation processes it is impractical to operate a stage at a cut of for mechanical or hydraulic reasons, and in others the separative capacity of the stage is higher at a cut substantially different from In the Becker separation nozzle process described in Chap. 14, the separative capacity of a stage producing a heads stream at a given rate is substantially hi er at a cut of than at a cut of j.

Power requirement. In the separation nozzle elements shown in Figs. 14.24 and 14.25, the kinetic energy of the expanded gas is dissipated after separation. Then the minimum net power to recompress the gases leaving the separator at pressure p to the feed pressure p is... 

In the UCOR process, unlike the separation nozzle process, the depleted stream is recompressed through a smaller pressure ratio (1.12) than the enriched stream (1.5). Hence, to evaluate the energy used in compression it is necessary to know the hydrogen cut 8, the fraction of hydrogen fed that leaves in the enriched stream, and the composition of the enriched stream represented by the mole fraction /i of UF in it. A development analogous to the one that led to Eq. (14.271) for the Up6 cut results in Eq. (14.296) for the hydrogen cut ...
