Sensing functions

Further investigations with bimanyl-labeled K-Ras4B peptides demonstrated that relatively small differences in membrane charging (approximately 10 mol %) are sufficient for an electrostatic enrichment in the more negative environment [230]. With the farnesyl group as a hydrophobic anchor, the peptide is still mobile and can swap between vesicles but may find its target membrane with the sensitive surface potential-sensing function of its lysine residues.

In a wider sense, functionality distribution also means combination of reactive groups of one kind (for instance, hydroxy, or carboxyl, or isocyanate groups) of higher and lower reactivity in one precursor molecule. By this combination, the network build-up can be effectively controlled. For instance, one less reactive A group out of three in a trifunctional monomer in a RA3 + R B2 system promotes chain extension in contrast to branching and shifts the gel point to higher values [30],... 

In undamaged cells, PARP-1 is found at nucleoli and actively transcribed regions of chromatin (Fakan et al., 1988). When isolated nuclei are treated with RNase, PARP-1 localized to nucleoli is dispersed (Kaufmann et al., 1991). These observations suggest that PARP-1 binds to RNA in cells. The damage sensing function of PARP-1, therefore, should be related to the binding of PARP-1 to RNA. 

For this we return to thinking of A as in some sense functions on Spec A. The open set Spec A Z(f) is canonically homeomorphic to the spectrum of the localized ring <4[/ 1] = Af, so it is reasonable to consider Af as the functions on that open set. Intuitively we are just allowing rational functions on the set where the denominator does not vanish. One can show that these functions have a reasonable local-determination property a function on a large open set U = (J U, is precisely determined by a family of functions /, on Ua in which/, and ff agree on Ua n Ufi. This says we have a sheaf of functions (see (15.6)).
