Self-replication challenges

An account of what sustains Life is an effort more modest in scope than either an attempt to explain what is Life or a challenge to recount where or how Life began l ie latter focus more on heredity and address the transition from a prebiotic to a biotic earth, which concern the more profound transition from the absence to the presence of self-sustaining, self-replicating Life. With present knowledge it seems possible that the origins of Life could have involved far-from-equilibrium conditions of the Prigogine focus. ... [Pg.1]

There are several concepts and terms that are essential to discussions about QA, even the concept itself. While at a very detailed level any definition can be challenged as being too narrow or too broad, the definitions presented below are useful (20). It should be noted that these terms are quite recent in definition and are not usually given in statistics books. Other terms like pollution have evolved over hundreds of years (21). Some key terms used in the field like reproducibility, standard deviation, standard error, replicate analysis, blanks, spiked samples and blind samples are self-explanatory. [Pg.333]

Once these colloidal particles are in hand, the next challenge is to assemble them into larger scale superstructures. A promising class of such materials obtained by self-assembly is the colloidal crystals, ordered arrays of particles in the nanometer- to micrometer-size range. However, because the materials obtained after colloidal crystals are dried are brittle and can be redispersed in water, replication is necessary. In addition, the size and shape of the colloidal crystal needs to be controlled on a macroscopic scale. Several ways have been developed to control the organization of colloidal assembhes by using flow, surface tension forces, or electrical fields. [Pg.32]
