Users and supervisors of work equipment must have available to them adequate health and safety information and, where appropriate, specific written instructions pertaining to the use of the equipment (Regulation 8). User and supervisor training, including work methods, risks and precautions, are covered in Regulation 9. Some specific training which is referred to in the Approved Code of Practice includes young persons, and operators of self-propelled work equipment and chainsaws. 

The EU Directive 95/63/EC, the Amending Directive to the Use of Work Equipment Directive (AUWED), lays down wide-ranging requirements for the provision, management and use of mobile, self-propelled and remote-controlled work equipment, inspection of work equipment, provision and use of lifting equipment, and the management of lifting operations. 

Mobile equipment would normally move on wheels, tracks, rollers, skids, etc. Mobile equipment may be self-propelled, towed or remote controlled and may incorporate attachments. Pedestrian controlled work equipment, such as lawn mowers, is not covered by Part III.
