Self high-density

In low density reactant compacts, the reaction is believed to involve gas phase oxygen diffusion whereas under conditions of improved contact, in high-density material, the mobile species is identified as Fe2+. The metal catalyzes decomposition of the oxidant (KMn04), an effect that is inhibited by small quantities of certain additives (e.g. NaF). There is a large and specialist literature devoted to self-heating reactions.

Molecular calculations provide approaches to supramolecular structure and to the dynamics of self-assembly by extending atomic-molecular physics. Alternatively, the tools of finite element analysis can be used to approach the simulation of self-assembled film properties. The voxel4 size in finite element analysis needs be small compared to significant variation in structure-property relationships for self-assembled structures, this implies use of voxels of nanometer dimensions. However, the continuum constitutive relationships utilized for macroscopic-system calculations will be difficult to extend at this scale because nanostructure properties are expected to differ from microstructural properties. In addition, in structures with a high density of boundaries (such as thin multilayer films), poorly understood boundary conditions may contribute to inaccuracies.

These conditions are met in most practical situations, in micro- and even nanobiodevice applications. For instance, the high density of DNA molecules is required to increase the sensitivity of the device long DNA molecules are commonly (but not exclusively) used as target molecules in e.g., biosensors, microarrays and microPCR devices single DNA species used as targets translate in lack of complementarity and most substrates, (e.g., glass, polymers) for micro/nanobiodevices are amorphous. The critical difference between the self-assembled and amorphous DNA layers, which leads to the polymerlike character of the latter, is the lack of complementarity between adjacent strands.
