In societies or in spheres of social life where outcomes are regulated by competition, the emotion experienced by the winners is a variety of pride, triggered by the belief in one s own (socially defined) goodness. In genera), pride does not require interaction with others. It can arise even in the monadic case I may be quietly proud of my donations to charity, and even prouder of the fact that I hide them to others. It can also arise in either of the two dyadic cases that I described. Pride is likely to be especially intense, however, in the triadic case, in which esteem, self-esteem, and feelings of superiority merge into one delicious emotion. 

Urinary incontinence (UI) is defined as the complaint of involuntary leakage of urine. It is frequently accompanied by other bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms such as urgency, increased daytime frequency, and nocturia. It is a common yet underdetected and underreported health problem that can significantly affect quality of life. Patients with UI may have depression as a result of the perceived lack of self-control, loss of independence, and lack of self-esteem, and they often curtail their activities for fear of an accident. It may also have serious medical and economic ramifications for untreated or undertreated patients, including perineal dermatitis, worsening of pressure ulcers, urinary tract infections, and falls.

Several of the concepts—particularly self-esteem, self-confidence, optimism, and teamwork—are discussed in more detail in Section 5 of this Handbook. By rating how often you accomplish tire ideal coaching characteristic implied by each item in this questionnaire you will review key points of this chapter. If you are honest and frank, you will gain important insight from this exercise. Define your strengths and weaknesses, then apply what you have learned here to improve your competence as an actively caring safety coach. 

Given the power of conversation to resolve interpersonal conflict, achieve breakthroughs, and define public image, self-esteem, and culture, we need to direct this powerful tool to support safety.
