Self-assembled molecules mixtures

Although it is clear that complex lipids can be synthesized under laboratory simulations using pure reagents, the list of required ingredients does not seem plausible under prebiotic conditions. Therefore, it is unlikely that early membranes were composed of complex lipids such as phospholipids and cholesterol. Instead, there must have been a source of simpler amphiphilic molecules capable of self-assembly into membranes. One possibility is lipidlike fatty acids and fatty alcohols, which are products of FTT simulations of prebiotic geochemistry [12] and are also present in carbonaceous meteorites. Furthermore, as will be discussed later, these compounds form reasonably stable lipid bilayer membranes by self-assembly from mixtures (Fig. 4a). [Pg.10]

Amphiphilic molecules (surfactants) are composed of two different parts hydrophobic tail and hydrophilic head [1 ]. Due to their chemical structure they self-assemble into internal surfaces in water solutions or in mixtures of oil and water, where the tails are separated from the water solvent. These surfaces can form closed spherical or cylindrical micelles or bicontinuous phases [3,5]. In the latter case a single surface extends over the volume of the system and divides it into separated and mutually interwoven subvolumes. [Pg.686]

The presence of the C15 saturated chain displayed an efficient gelling ability in a wide range of organic solvents, water, and protic solvent mixtures (1 1), whereas the unsaturated derivatives (mixture of four molecules) formed fibrous nanostructures as opposed to stronger gels. The diene and triene components of the cardanyl glycosides in their fully hydrated state formed fluid nanostructures at room temperature and could not self-assemble to form gels. [Pg.269]
