Selective cationic polymerization, polymers

This result suggests that selective cationic polymerization of vinyl ether groups in the PNVE molecule proceeded success lly to give the corresponding polymer [P(PNVE)] containing pendant NBD moiety (Scheme 2).

Solvent polarity and temperature also influence ihe results. The dielectric constant and polarizability, however, are of little predictive value for the selection of solvents relative to polymerization rates and behavior. Evidently evety system has to he examined independently. In cationic polymerization of vinyl monomers, chain transfer is the most significant chain-breaking process. The activation energy of chain transfer is higher than that of propagation consequently, the molecular weight of the polymer increases with decreasing temperature. 

Three arm star polymers of IBVE were synthesized by living cationic polymerization using trifunctional initiators 8 and 9 with the same trifluoroacetate initiating functions but different cores [19, 20]. The experimental conditions were selected to obtain living polymerization. A series of acetic acid derivatives including trifluoroacetic acid and the IBVE-acid adduct were found to be efficient... 

Higher homologs of PEI can be obtained by cationic ring-opening polymerization of azetidine monomers21). Polymers of this kind can also be N-methylated as previously described in the case of PEI. The cationic polymerization of N-substituted azetidines may give rise to poly(tertiary amine)s. Linear poly(tertiary amine)s have been obtained by selective dealkylation of poly(quaternary ammonium salt)s22).
