SELECTED ALICYCLIC COMPOUNDS

Chapters V-X deal respectively with Heterocyclic and Alicyclic Compounds Miscellaneous Reactions Organic Reagents in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Dyestuffs, Indicators and Related Compounds Some Physiologically-Active Compounds and Synthetic Polymers. Many of these preparations are of course intended for advanced students, but a mere perusal of the experimental details of selected preparations by those whose time for experimental work is limited may assist to impress them on the memory. Attention is particularly directed to the chapter... [Pg.1193]

For purely alicyclic compounds, the selection process proceeds successively until a decision is reached (a) the maximum number of substituents corresponding to the characteristic group cited earliest in Table 1.7, (b) the maximum number of double and triple bonds considered together, (c) the maximum length of the chain, and (d) the maximum number of double bonds. Additional criteria, if needed for complicated compounds, are given in the lUPAC nomenclature rules. [Pg.18]

A variety of isomeric or closely related mixtures of organic compounds are often found when manufacturing chemical and pharmaceutical products. However, it is usually necessary to separate these molecules in order to obtain the expected functionality of the products. Conventional methods such as distillation, extraction and crystallization might be difficult to use since the molecules to be separated might have very close chemical and physical properties. Hydrotropes are known to be selective in the solubilization of compounds and as mentioned earlier, do not perform so generally as surfactants. It has been found that the solubility enhancement in water by adding the hydrotrope sodium xylene sulfonate (SXS) will vary for different isomers such as o- and /7-nitrochlorobenzene, as well as for o- and p-dichlorobenzene (24). In this case, the c -isomer is more soluble than the p-isomer. Higher solubilities have also been reported for aromatic compounds when compared to aliphatic and alicyclic compounds (24). This selective... [Pg.416]

A lot of other studies have focussed on other types of molecules, such as naturally occurring terpenes and alkaloids, as well as unnatural alicyclic and heterocyclic compounds. Yields of selectively hydroxylated compounds can be good to very good, as indicated in Scheme 4.23. The micro-... [Pg.112]

Similarly, 6°-metacyclophane forms clathrate complexes with benzene derivatives or alicyclic compounds, where only a little guest selectivity has been found ) The ratio n/m of these crystal lattice (cavity) inclusion compounds varies significantly, e.g., n/m=0.3-0.6 (cyclotricatechylene), 2-6 (tri-O-thymotide). It has been found that tri-O-thymotide resolves optical isomers, e.g., 2-butyl halides, by making host-guest inclusion crystals. These optical resolutions are therefore attributable to the crystal lattice chirality that was induced... [Pg.86]

Other polynuclear hydrocarbons may include bridged hydrocarbons, spiro hydrocarbons, mixed systems containing alicyclic and aromatic rings, and aliphatic chains, etc. Examples may be found in the CRC Handbook [63, Section C]. Physical properties of selected polynuclear aromatic compounds are given in [49, p. 967]. [Pg.312]
