Segment elasticity

A more detailed view of the dynamies of a ehromatin chain was achieved in a recent Brownian dynamics simulation by Beard and Schlick [65]. Like in previous work, the DNA is treated as a segmented elastic chain however, the nueleosomes are modeled as flat cylinders with the DNA attached to the cylinder surface at the positions known from the crystallographic structure of the nucleosome. Moreover, the electrostatic interactions are treated in a very detailed manner the charge distribution on the nucleosome core particle is obtained from a solution to the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann equation in the surrounding solvent, and the total electrostatic energy is computed through the Debye-Hiickel approximation over all charges on the nucleosome and the linker DNA. [Pg.414]

Other elastomeric-type fibers iaclude the biconstituents, which usually combine a polyamide or polyester with a segmented polyurethane-based fiber. These two constituents ate melt-extmded simultaneously through the same spinneret hole and may be arranged either side by side or ia an eccentric sheath—cote configuration. More recentiy, melt-spun biconstituent sheath—core elastic fibers have been commercialized. They normally consist of a hard fiber sheath (polyamide or polyester) along with a segmented polyurethane core polymer (11,12). The melt temperature of a polyurethane is important for processibiUty. Melting should occur well below the decomposition temperature. Below the glass-transition temperature the molecular motion is frozen, and the material is only able to undergo small-scale elastic deformations. For amorphous polyurethane elastomers, the T of the soft segment is ca —50 to —60 " C, whereas for the amorphous hard segment, T is in the 20—100°C range. The pseudocross-links, generated by the hard-segment interactions, are reversed by heating or dissolution. Without the domain crystallinity, thermoplastic polyurethanes would lack elastic character and be more gum-like in nature. In view of the outlined morphology, it is not surprising that many products develop their ultimate properties only on curing at elevated temperature, which allows the soft- and hard-phase segments to separate. [Pg.344]

It has already been mentioned that polymer melts are non-Newtonian and are in fact under normal circumstances pseudoplastic. This appears to arise from the elastic nature of the melt which will be touched on only briefly here. In essence, under shear, polymers tend to be oriented. At low shear rates Brownian motion of the segments occurs so polymers can coil up at a faster rate than they are oriented and to some extent disentangled. At high shear rates such re-entangling rates are slower than the orientation rates and the polymer is hence apparently less viscous. [Pg.169]

One partieular form of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers is the elastic fibre known as spandex fibre. Like the usual thermoplastic rubbers these materials consist of hard and soft segments but to qualify for the term spandex by the US Federal Trade Commission the polymer used should contain at least 85% of segmented polyurethane. The first commercial material of this type was introduced by Du Pont in 1958 (Lycra).
