Sedimentation, high velocity

In particular, the propellant-driven metered-dose inhalers release the aerosol cloud at the very high velocity caused by the pressure of the propellant. The open-mouth technique of inhalation [79] helps to slow down the droplets (and to evaporate the volatile excipients). An even more effective solution is to use spacer devices [4,79-87], in which the aerosol cloud can slowed down, the volatile constituents can evaporate, and any large particles will sediment out. Moreover, the patient can then inhale the remaining aerosol under optimal conditions for pulmonary delivery [4,8,56,79], that is, with a slow inspiratory flow rate. [Pg.94]

Spiral-plate exchangers provide high surface densities. The induced secondary flow results in enhanced heat-transfer coefficients, especially for viscous fluids, and reduced sedimentation-type fouling. Spiral-plate exchangers can be easily opened for cleaning by high-velocity water jets. [Pg.547]

After dissociation of the native enzyme complex at elevated pH values, the / subunits form high molecular weight aggregates. These aggregates form a complex mixture of different molecular species, which sediment at velocities of about 48 and 70 S. Electron micrographs show hollow, spherical vesicles with diameters of about... [Pg.15]

Anderson combined his love for teaching and interest in students with an active research program. In addition to sediment transport, he was also active in research in such areas as flow in bends, culvert hydraulics, air entrainment by high-velocity flow, or hydraulic structures. He was further active as a consultant for both national and international projects. He also took interest in professional associations, including the International Association for Hydraulic Research lAHR, the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE, or AWRA. He was the recipient of the 1961 ASCE Norman Medal for the benchmark paper Self-aerated flow, co-authored by Lorenz G. Straub (1901-1963), and the 1965 ASCE J.C. Stevens Award for discussing Sediment transportation mechanics. [Pg.49]

The approach is to first of all obtain mucin to a high degree of purity and to characterise the mucin and potential mucoadhesive. This is done by sedimentation velocity [g (s)j analysis and sedimentation equilibrium (M ) analysis—according to the procedures described above—together with SEC-MALLs [145,146]. [Pg.244]
