Secondary explosives correlations

Figure 2.8 shows a correlation between the mass of the secondary explosive used and the safe distance for occupied buildings. Of course this is only a very rough guide and it is dependent on the building and the nature of the explosive used. 

A remarkable paper has been published by Cherville and co-workers [80]. They examined the behaviour of a few secondary explosives to the irradiation from Co and introduced the value Gnoj the quantity of NOj by irradiation. Of interest are some correlations which Cook tentatively established between theoretical detonation and explosion results and the practical performance of explosives. For a group of primary and near-primary explosives (lead azide, mercury fulminate, and six CHNO explosives), he found a correlation between the probable order of ease of transition from deflagration to detonation and adiabatic explosion temperature. Moreover, he noted a rough correlation between the effectiveness of a primary explosive as a detonator (its ability to transfer detonation to a secondary explosive) and the C-J pressure [130].
