SCREW-CONVEYOR DRYERS. A screw-conveyor is a continuous indirect-heat dryer, consisting essentially of a horizontal screw conveyor (or paddle conveyor) enclosed in a cylindrical jacketed shell. Solid fed in one end is conveyed slowly through the heated zone and discharges from the other end. The vapor evolved is withdrawn through pipes set in the roof of the shell. The shell is 75 to 600 mm (3 to 24 in.) in diameter and up to 6 m (20 ft) long when more length is required, several conveyors are set one above another in a bank. Often the bottom unit in such a bank is a cooler in which water or another coolant in the jacket lowers the temperature of the dried solids before they are discharged. [Pg.798]

Screw-conveyor dryers handle solids that are too fine and too sticky for rotary dryers. They are completely enclosed and permit recovery of solvent vapors with little or no dilution by air. When provided with appropriate feeders, they can be operated under moderate vacuum. Thus they are adaptable to the continuous removal and recovery of volatile solvents from solvent-wet solids, such as spent meal from leaching operations. For this reason they are sometimes known as desolventizers. [Pg.798]

Screw conveyor dryers have hollow shafts or flights through which the heated gas flows. The trough that carries the material is similarly heated. The free-flowing wet feed is transported and dried as it is conveyed to the exit. It is especially well suited as a supplemental dryer for an existing dryer. [Pg.865]

Spray Dryers A spray diyer consists of a large cyhndrical and usu ly vertical chamber into which material to be dried is sprayed in the form of small droplets and into which is fed a large volume of hot gas sufficient to supply the heat necessary to complete evaporation of the liquid. Heat transfer and mass transfer are accomphshed by direct contact of the hot gas with the dispersed droplets. After completion of diying, the cooled gas and solids are separated. This may be accomplished partially at the bottom of the diying chamber by classification and separation of the coarse dried particles. Fine particles are separated from the gas in external cyclones or bag collectors. When only the coarse-particle fraction is desired for fini ed product, fines may be recovered in wet scrubbers the scrubber liquid is concentrated and returned as feed to the diyer. Horizontal spray chambers are manufactured with a longitudinal screw conveyor in the bottom of the diying chamber for continuous removal of settled coarse particles. [Pg.1229]

When the temperature of the drying material must be kept as low as possible, vacuum drying is used, and one form of vacuum dryer is shown in Figure 16.18. The dried material is collected in two screw conveyors and carried usually to two receivers so that one can be filled while the other is emptied. [Pg.933]

Screw conveyor and indirect rotary. Indirect type, continuous operation. Includes paddle, horizontal agitated and steam-tube dryers, rotary kilns. Applicable with dry-product recirculation Applicable with dry-product recirculation Generally requires recirculation of dry product. Little dusting occurs. Chief advantage is low dust loss. Well suited to most materials and capacities, particularly those requiring drying at steam temperature Low dust loss. Material must not stick or be temperature-sensitive Not applicable Not applicable Not applicable... [Pg.1364]

The dewatered cake was dried to the water content of 30 to -0 % in the indirect steam dryer, and fed into the pyrolytic furnace through the screw conveyor. Combustion air less than the theoretical amounts for sludge is supplied into the furnace for partial combustion of combustible pyrolitic gas. That is, pyrolysis was carried out by Direct Heating method. [Pg.490]
