The fact that the abnormality persists after treatment led us to explore the possibiUty that the spectral changes (and, therewith, the malignancy associated changes [58] or field cancerization [59]) are actually due to viral infection. 

In part, this thought was provoked by results from a patient with an acute H. simplex infection of the oral cavity. In this case, most of the cells showed spectral abnormality, not only those that were so grotesquely deformed by the viral infection that they could be visually diagnosed by a cytologist [44].
