It thus appears that the obscuring masses or dark nebulae in Ophiuchus and Scorpius are at a distance of from 100 to 150 parsecs, those in Taurus at probably about the same distance, and those in Orion some 200 parsecs from us, while the dimensions of the individual clouds are themselves measured in parsecs.

John Gardner, Scorpius (1988) does take place against the background of a British General Election, but about the only clearly recognisable contemporary pohtician is Thatcher.

The first X-ray source, scorpius X-1, was discovered more by accident during a rocket experiment conducted by NASA. These discoveries established the X-ray astronomy and opened up the new research field of X-ray imaging optics.
