Professor Curie continued his researches on the growth of crystals, and his young wife prepared for her examinations. Many chemists consider her dissertation (55) to be the most remarkable thesis ever presented for the doctorate. She continued the work begun by Becquerel, and tested most of the known elements, including a number of rare ones loaned by E.-A. Demarpay and Georges Urbain, with Prof. Curie s piezoelectric quartz electrometer, and found that thorium and uranium were the only ones whose compounds produced appreciable ionization (26, 54, 55). The radioactivity of thorium was discovered independently by Gerhardt Carl Schmidt, professor of physics at the University of Munster (25).

Pasteur showed that small quantities of succinic acid and glycerol are formed in alcoholic fermentation. Beissenhirtz found that succinic acid is formed in the fermentation of honey, bread, etc. It was detected in alcoholic fermentation by Carl Schmidt (Mitau, Curland, i June 1822 (O.S.)-Dorpat, 27 February 1894 (O.S.)), a pupil of Liebig and later professor in Dorpat, and by Schunck. It is now known that the amyl alcohol and succinic acid formed in alcoholic fermentation originate from amino-acids and proteins, but the glycerol is apparently formed from sugar.

About 1895 Benjamin Moore, then an assistant professor of physiological chemistry at University College London, began to assemble data for his chapter on Chemistry of the Digestive Processes, to be published in 1898 in the first volume of E. A. Schafer s Text-book of Physiology To establish the composition of gastric juice, Moore quoted the data that Carl Schmidt had collected in Dorpat and had published in Bidder and Schmidt s Die Verdauungssaefte und der Stoffwechsel in 1852 (Table 1-1). ...
