Whether or not we scale, weight, and/or center our data, a mandatory pretreatment is required by most of the algorithms used to calculate the eigenvectors. Most algorithms require that we square our data matrix, A, by either pre- or post-multiplying it by its transpose ...

Human loudness perception depends in a complex manner on both frequency and the overall loudness of sound. (For example, bass is more difficult to hear in music played at low volume than in the same music played at high volume.) To capture this behavior, two weighting scales have been developed for use in sound hazard analysis. The most common of these is the A weighting scale, which is commonly used to assess occupational and environmental noise. The A scale weights sounds in the 1000-6000 Hz range much more heavily than low-frequency sounds. The A-weighted intensities (dBA) of some common sounds are listed in Table 5. By contrast, the C weighting scale is used for very loud sounds and is a much flatter function of frequency. 

Fig. 39 shows the sorption isotherms of the system acetone trinitrocellulose as determined by Calvet at 16°.3 and by Desmaroux, Mathieu and Petitpas at 40°. In Fig. 39a the molar concentration of acetone tiKn -f n) in the mixture is plotted against the relative vapour pressure pjp y in Fig. 39b the 16°.5 isotherm is shown on another scale (weight of acetone per g of nitrocellulose (a) against p/p ).

Some solids feeders have a two-stage design that allows granules to drop into a variable-speed screw mounted on a scale. From the scale, a constant-speed screw delivers granules to a discharge line. The speed of the first screw is adjusted to maintain a constant scale weight. The result is a feed that is constant by weight.
