Sarrett

Pregniines. In 1944, Sarrett completed the first partial synthesis of cortisone (172). Like many of the early syntheses of corticosteroids, Sarrett began with the a bile acid, deoxychoHc acid (14). Because bile acids are isolated from animal sources, their supply is by necessity limited (173). Following these early syntheses, several improvements and innovations have resulted in a number of industrial syntheses of cortisol and other corticosteroids. 

Similar to the Sarrett Reagent. The major difference appears that the classical Collins Reagent is filtered while the Sarrett is used in pyridine. 

An anecdote illustrates Tishler s drive. The total synthesis of cortisone, as devised by Lewis Sarrett, comprised approximately 30 steps and required weeks of intense and painstaking effort. Max was in charge of the first commercial production of cortisone in the pilot plant. One of the final steps is the isomerisation of a double bond into conjugation with the 3-ketone function with the formation of a 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone, causing the development of a brilliant, scarlet color. Tishler was inspecting the first production run. To his horror, he spotted a bright-red liquid leaking near the vessel. "I hope that s blood ", he exclaimed. Actually, Max was very concerned for individuals, beneath a rather formidable exterior.

There are undoubtedly many early examples of the phenomenon now known as phase transfer catalysis and a presentation of all of them is neither valuable nor feasible. Some of the early work does merit presentation, however, if only to provide a sense of perspective on the field. Wittig and coworkers demonstrated in 1947 the value of utilizing tetramethylammonium cations paired with trityl and fluorenide ions for alkylation in dry alcohol solution [1 ].
