Sanity

Saniti r is a chemical agent used on inanimate objects that reduces the number of microbial contaminants to safe limits as judged by pubHc health requirements. 

Some parepistemes are pursued by small worldwide groups whose members all know each other, others involve vast communities which, to preserve their sanity, need to sub-classify themselves into numerous subsets. They all seem to share the feature, however, that they are not disciplines in the sense that I have analysed these... 

Whose morning coffee chats about piiysics, engineering and cosmology kept my sanity in check. 

For well over 100 years, nearly all new work in organic chemistry (except for that disclosed in patents) has been published in journals. There are thousands of journals that publish chemical papers, in many countries and in many languages. Some print papers covering all fields of science some are restricted to chemistry some to organic chemistry and some are still more specialized. Fortunately for the sanity of organic chemists, the vast majority of important papers in pure organic chemistry (as opposed to applied ) are published in relatively few journals, perhaps 50 or fewer. Of course, this is still a large number, especially since some are published...

Using the raw data in Fig. 3.20, we can identify the Pareto-optimal set for the HER activify/stabilify criteria. This set represents the best possible compromise between activity and stability criteria for the surface alloys that we have considered the alloys in the set are, thus, logical choices for further consideration. The presence of pure Pt on the Pareto-optimal set is, in effect, a sanity check for our computational screening procedure. Pt is well known to be the most active and stable pure metal for the HER in acidic conditions. The alloys seen on the Pareto-optimal set include RhRe and BiPt.

The lesson I learned from all this was that we shouldn t outright believe anything put in front of us, even if it is on semi-glossy paper or in high-definition video or Flash HTML format. As engineers, we need to put pen to paper, and at least do a sanity check. And lest it be misunderstood, don t forget to do the same for this book too. 

ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO BE A WORTHWHILE HUMAN BEING REGARDLESS OF (OR IN SPITE OF) HOW MUCH BIOCHEMISTRY YOU KNOW. This won t necessarily help you with biochemistry, but it may help you keep your sanity. 

The combination of all invariants for a class can be used in a single ok() function, which should evaluate to true after any external invocation of an operation on the object. Such a function provides a valuable sanity check on the state of a running applicatioa Together with operation specifications, it provides the basis for both testing and debugging. 

A justification for believing you ve done the refinement correctly—that is, that the abstraction really describes the realization accurately. (Doing this is an invaluable sanity check and helps reviewers and maintained.)... 

Systematically go into more detail about actions and models, always mapping back to the abstract versions as a sanity check. 

Hmm... presumably said Dr. K, after examining the prisoners. T wonder if what works in the eye would work the same way in the body, and enable these poor wretehes to regain their sanity. He deeided it was worth a try. 

Speaking of Peace and Love, one day a young man came in, quite disorganized but verbally profuse. He said he had taken a drug called the Peace Pill. Successful completion of this project was only possible through the professional and personal support of our friends and neighbors, particularly in University Hills at UCI as well as in our Fawnskin mountain hamlet (population 360 and elevation 6500 ft), especially Doris Layne and Linda Neuman. History has shown that when scientific medicine leaves a vacuum, a host of alternative practitioners will rush in to fill it. These people claim to have the answers that have somehow eluded mainstream researchers. Such as the benefits of the Harmony Token, a colored disk you wear around your neck its manufacturer claims that it resupplies minerals, vitamins, and amino acids with the color that has been stripped away by exposure to electromagnetic radiation. Our bodies, apparently, do not recognize these colorless substances and, as a consequence, our immune systems are weakened. The Harmony Token utilizes 2,800 colors to rebuild and repair the body at the cellular level and allows victims of rheumatoid arthritis to resume normal lives. Testimonials proclaim the disk s astonishing powers it improves gas mileage and reduces car emissions it makes racehorses run faster it cures migraines. It also makes me wonder about people s sanity. 

Not everyone can remember dreams, and many of the dreams that we remember are banal. Dreaming may thus be too weak a phenomenon to allow anyone to appreciate the direct and indirect didactic impact of dreaming. The realization that sanity and insanity are separated by a fine line and that insanity has its own instructive form may be lost on many of us.
