This work is currently supported by NSF grant DMR 9313371 and by the Materials Science Center at Cornell University under NSF Grant DMR 9121654. We are particularly grateful to the staff of the Cornell Nanofabrication Facility for their assistance in creating the periodic starting stractures. The LEEM experiments on Si were carried out in collaboration with Ruud Tromp and Marion Mankos at IBM, Yorktown Heights, NY. Norm Bartelt of Sandia Labs, Livermore, CA has modeled the kinetics of the island and hole decay on the 2-D gratings. [Pg.38]

Figures 14.2 and 14.3 show closeups of poly-Si micromachines from Sandia Labs, manufactured by using several poly-Si CMP processes. Figure 14.2 depicts the gear wheels of a 10 1 transmission. Due to CMP, the gears are completely planar. Figure 14.3 shows the alignment clips for positioning the gears. The two layers of gears are clearly visible. More examples that show where the five-layer surface micromachining process has been employed are... To counter this concern, Sandia labs developed another foam product that was faster acting and less corrosive, DF-200. DF-200 has a lower concentration of peroxide and surfactants and contains an activator to increase the speed with which it breaks down agents. [Pg.620]

Only a few years after the introduction of CMP for the fabrication of More Moore devices, the first MEMS devices were demonstrated by Sandia labs, which employed pofishing for poly-Si layer planarization (Sniegowski, 1996). Later, CMP was adopted for the fabrication of many More than Moore devices. [Pg.464]
