Sandal-wood or Sanders-wood (from Pterocarpus santalinus) contains a resinous red dyestuff of slightly acid properties. Santalin, CijHj Og, is obtained by precipitating an alcoholic extract of sandal-wood with lead acetate, and decomposing the lead lake with dilute sulphuric acid. It crystallises from alcohol in red prisms, M.P. 104°, It is sparingly soluble in water, dissolves in alcohol and ether with a blood-red colour, and in alkalies with a violet colour. It gives violet insoluble lakes with calcium, barium, and the heavy metals. [Pg.263]
