Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry data of the "aromatic hydrocarbon" fractions of nearly 100 Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sediment samples have been re-examined for the occurrence of organic sulfur compounds (OSC). Approximately 70% of the samples contain OSC with varying distribution patterns, although isoprenoid thiophenes are invariably present. 

Samples were made available by the support of the Deep Sea Drilling Project and the Ocean Drilling Program. Core sampling is mainly a part of the exploration and reserve evaluation stage. This is however very important for the development of a future mine. A geologist is usually assigned to supervise a drilling program. Coal samples are collected in wooden box carefully in the field if not sampled at the field. Most of the time, an e-log is prepared for each completed hole in recent time. A geologist checks the e-log for the coal thickness and adjusts the core recovery for the collected coal seam.
