Sample Control. In figure 7, the technician is sampling with a sampler diluter from the capillary. Here we see what is called "sample control". None of the specimen is being wasted on the walls of a cup. All of it is being taken eventually into the capillary and then dispensed. With a setup as shown in Figure 7, synchronized with this diluter, is a multiple dispenser, which can dispense several reagents at the same time that the specimen is added to the tube. 

These factors motivated a complete shift in sampler design from asynchronous to synchronous pitch shifting techniques in the middle 1980 s. 

Today, synchronous outputs have become the standard in sampler design.

Central to the successful operation of an SIA instrument is a selection valve operated in synchronization with a pump, generally this valve is a multiposition valve, although auto samplers and magnetic snap valves have also been used for this purpose. The selection valve is connected to various sample and reagent reservoirs, typically via Teflon tubing. 

But the prime function of most controllers is that of load regulation. And load changes may occur at any time during the sampling interval— they are not normally synchronized to the sampler. If the full effect of a load change is manifested immediately before the controlled variable is sampled, the corrective action will be applied immediately. But if the load change occurs at any other time within the sampling interval, recovery will be delayed.
