Sample Flat-Top Chain Conveyor Selection

Conveyor layout Conveyor runs straight for 2 ft, turns 90 degrees to the right and runs straight again for 12 ft. 

Product conveyed Filled 12 oz. soft drink cans weight, 0.85 lb each. Cans are 2.6 in diameter. Weight per foot = (12/2.6) x 0.85 = 3.92 Ib/ft. Cans to be conveyed single file with no space between. Need an output rate of 60,000 cans/hr. 

Environment Some corrosion possible. Soap and water to be used as lubricant. 

From Table 12-3, an acetal is selected for the chain material. Stainless steel or low-friction acetal also could have been selected, but acetal is less costly and is acceptable for the conditions. 

From Table 12-4, UHMWPE is selected for the wear strip material. Nylon was not selected because it absorbs water. Stainless steel was not selected because it is more costly and difficult to work with.
