Cellobiase can be measured by following the glucose production from cellobiose and cellodextrins, the saligenin from salicin, and the p-nitrophenol formation from its / -glucoside (2). [Pg.96]

Salicin.—It derives its name from the glucoside salicin which is present in the bark of willow trees, the generic name of which is Salix, When the glucoside is hydrolyzed it yields glucose and a compound known as saligenin, which is salicylic alcohol or ortho-hydroxy benzyl alcohol, and which on oxidation yields salicylic acid. This is one of the natural sources of the acid. [Pg.718]

Aromatic Cg. Ci aldehydes and alcohols are relatively infrequently encountered in higher plants and thdr occurrence has something of a novelty value. The most prominent of the Q. C, aldehydes is probably vanillin (105) and of the alcohols saligenin, as the /J-d-glucoside salicin (20), and the two glucosides of gentisyl alcohol (31 and 32) are certainly the most noteworthy. [Pg.221]
