Occurrence. There are many polysaccharides that yield D-mannose on hydrolysis. For preparative purposes, the most important source is the seed of the tagua palm Phytelephas macrocarpa, also known as vegetable ivory.117 Salep mucilage from tubers of Orchidaceae, the seed of Phoenix canariensis, and white spruce hemicellulose are rich enough sources of D-mannose that they have been used for the preparation of this sugar. Konjac flour, which is commonly available in Japan from Amorphophallus konjac, provides another source of this hexose.118... [Pg.26]

If the mucilage occurs on the outside of the seed coating then, for isolation, extraction with water suffices if in the endosperm (as for Foenum graecum) or in the tuber tissue (salep) then the seed or tubers must be powdered. [Pg.265]

One of the first mucilages to be examined in any detail was that from the Orchidaceae, namely, salep mannan or mucilage. This material may be extracted from the powdered tuber with cold water from which it is precipitated with alcohol. It was early shown that D-mannose is the... [Pg.265]

These last two mucilages have been examined in some detail. Gum gatto in some respects has a structure which resembles that of salep mannan and ivory nut mannan. Lucerne seed mucilage, on the other... [Pg.266]

Mucilage is stored as reserve food in the tubers of Salep and many other Orchids and also in the seeds of some species. of the Leguminosaj. [Pg.91]
