Safety Measures in Plastering

The ehemieal reaetion that oceurs when plaster is mixed with water is exothermie in nature and ean therefore eause severe bums. Some variations of plaster that eontains powdered siliea or asbestos may present health hazards if inhaled. Asbestos is a known irritant when inhaled in powder form can cause cancer, espeeially in people who smoke, and inhalation can also cause asbestosis. Inhaled siliea ean eause silieosis and (in veiy rare cases) can encourage the development of eancer. Persons working regularly with plaster containing these additives should take precautions to avoid inhaling powdered plaster, cured or uncured. Asbestos is rarely used in modem plaster formulations because of its carcinogenie efifeets. [Pg.206]
