Despite the many safeguards that should be provided in the workplace to ensure enq>loyee safety, injuries can still occur. There are situations in which the hazard cannot be conq>letely guarded or controlled thus the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers. Initially, the Health Safety at Work Act 1974, was designed to make those persons who created and controlled risk responsible for ensuring persons exposed to these risks were safeguarded from them. This meant employers, directors, managers and supervisors etc had direct responsibility for the safety of their work operation.
