Saddle point coordinates method

Techniques have been developed within the CASSCF method to characterize the critical points on the excited-state PES. Analytic first and second derivatives mean that minima and saddle points can be located using traditional energy optimization procedures. More importantly, intersections can also be located using constrained minimization [42,43]. Of particular interest for the mechanism of a reaction is the minimum energy path (MEP), defined as the line followed by a classical particle with zero kinetic energy [44-46]. Such paths can be calculated using intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) techniques... [Pg.253]

HyperChem can calculate transition structures with either semi-empirical quantum mechanics methods or the ab initio quantum mechanics method. A transition state search finds the maximum energy along a reaction coordinate on a potential energy surface. It locates the first-order saddle point that is, the structure with only one imaginary frequency, having one negative eigenvalue. [Pg.65]

Alternatively one can make use of No Barrier Theory (NBT), which allows calculation of the free energy of activation for such reactions with no need for an empirical intrinsic barrier. This approach treats a real chemical reaction as a result of several simple processes for each of which the energy would be a quadratic function of a suitable reaction coordinate. This allows interpolation of the reaction hypersurface a search for the lowest saddle point gives the free energy of activation. This method has been applied to enolate formation, ketene hydration, carbonyl hydration, decarboxylation, and the addition of water to carbocations. ... [Pg.20]

As explained above, the QM/MM-FE method requires the calculation of the MEP. The MEP for a potential energy surface is the steepest descent path that connects a first order saddle point (transition state) with two minima (reactant and product). Several methods have been recently adapted by our lab to calculate MEPs in enzymes. These methods include coordinate driving (CD) [13,19], nudged elastic band (NEB) [20-25], a second order parallel path optimizer method [25, 26], a procedure that combines these last two methods in order to improve computational efficiency [27],... [Pg.58]

Using the same method as for the first excited electronic state, we select a level shift in the region Xi < p < X2. This procedure may indeed lead to a transition state but in this way we always increase the function along the lowest mode. However, if we wish to increase it along a higher mode this can only be accomplished in a somewhat unsatisfactory manner by coordinate scaling. Nevertheless, this method has been used by several authors with considerable success.14 The problem of several first-order saddle points does not arise in electronic structure calculations since there is only one first excited state.15... [Pg.317]
