Now that the reason for the pit corrosion is understood, metallurgists should be able to develop methods of stainless steel formulation that avoid this problem. One British scientist, Mary P. Ryan, suggests that heat treatment of the stainless steel may solve the problem by allowing Cr atoms to diffuse from the inclusion back into the surrounding area. Because corrosion of regular steel is such an important issue, finding ways to make cheaper stainless steel will have a significant economic impact. We need stainless without the pits. [Pg.603]
