ABSTRACT Plant raw processing via acid hydrolysis is widely spread in Russia. Hydrolysis lignin is a large scale waste of this processing. In Russia hydrolysis lignin deposits mount to more than 1 million tons, Hydrolysis lignin contains 60-80% carbon and is a promising raw for production of adsorbents. [Pg.1509]

In contrast to the Western economy, the Russia continued expansion of wood hydrolysis facilities, and about 40 such plants are presently in operation. All the Russian plants are based on dilute sulfuric acid in percolation towers. In the West interest in producing alcohols from wood was revitalized by the dramatic increase in the price of petroleum in the 1970s and the push to decrease oil imports by substituting gasohol, which is one part alcohol in nine parts gasoline, for 100 percent gasoline at gas pumps. Four kinds of hydrolysis lignin (HL) samples obtained from different industrial plants in New Zealand and three different places in Russia (Archangelsk, Lobin-sky, and Kirovsky) were used. Lignin powder samples were dissolved in DEG or polyethylene glycol (PEG) and HL polyols were prepared [54]. Rigid polyurethane (PU) foams were obtained through the reaction of HL polyols with MDI. Optimum reaction conditions in order to attain designed properties were examined. [Pg.37]
