Elastomeric materials find use as vial closures, as syringe plungers, and as liquid delivery components. Compression set is commonly used as a measure of the dimensional recovery of a rubber compound after compression at a defined level, usually 25%, at a specified time and temperature, usually 24 h at 70°C. High compression set values are associated with rubber that takes a set or loses its ability to spring back after compression. Low compression set is important for rubber closures and syringe plungers that are heat sterilized while under compression and remain under compression for long periods of time before use but must remain elastic and resilient to maintain seal integrity. Compression Set is measured on dimensionally defined test specimens. 

Salmona et al. [66] used El and CIMS to identify benzothiazole derivatives leached into injections by rubber plunger seals from disposable syringes. One of the compounds was used as a rubber vulcanisation accelerator, and four others were formed during syringe sterilisation with ethylene oxide. Applications of hyphenated chemical impact mass-spectrometric techniques are described elsewhere GC-MS (Section 7.3.1.2), for polar and nonpolar volatile organics, SFC-MS (Section 13.2.2) and TLC-MS (Section 7.3.5.4). 

In his work, Penefsky simply used 1 ml Plastipak tuberculin syringes fitted with porous disks cut with a cork borer (0.193 inch inside diameter) from polyethylene sheets (1.5 mm thick, 70 micrometer pore size) available from Bolab, Inc. (Deery, NH). Note The rubberized plungers of most syringes frequently contain lubricants, and these agents may bind to enzymes or they may dissolve and contaminate some enzyme preparations. 

Paraldehyde Care must be exercised when using paraldehyde. It must not be administered if is brownish in color or gives off a sharp odor of acetic acid. Degradation is much more pronounced once the containers are opened. Polypropylene or glass syringes with natural rubber-tipped plastic plungers are acceptable only for the immediate administration or measurement of paraldehyde doses.
