Rolling, Tack and Adhesive Hysteresis

In considering the mechanism of adhesive hysteresis, where energy is lost during a complete cycle of making and breaking an adhesive joint, it is worth considering the example of a cylinder sitting on a plane surface, as illustrated in Fig. 8.17. 

As the cylinder makes adhesive contact, the crack moves out to heal the surfaces together, Fig 8.17(a), then during breaking, Fig. 8.17(b), the crack moves
