The hot-feed rubber extruder is usually characterised by a relatively large screw depth and a relatively short L/D ratio of the barrel of 3 to 8 1 with the greatest number of machines having a ratio of 4 1. The barrel comprises usually a cast iron outer with either a traditional replaceable nitride liner, or, in the case of one manufacturer, of a single piece construction with an integral cast liner which has a surface hardness of Rockwell C60-62 and a hardness depth of 1.5 mm. With the second category of hardness tests the measurement is carried out after the load is removed. This is the case with Rockwell R, S, V. Scales R and L are used for low-hardness number, e.g., Rockwell R60. Scales R and L are used for low-hardness materials, and scales M and E when the hardness value is high. Other common hardness tests involve the use of diamond pyramids. In the Vickers hardness test, a square pyramid is used and in the Knoop hardness test, the pyramid is elongated. The area term in the former test is the actual indentation area and in the latter, the projected area. From the impression geometries, shown in Fig. 6.30, the Vickers Hardness Number (VHN) and Knoop Hardness Number (KHN) can be shown to be VHN=1.854F/a and KHN=14.2F/L, respectively. A common hardness test in the USA is the RockweO hardness test, which uses various indenter types and loads. Hardness is defined as the resistance of a material to deformation, particularly permanent deformation, indentation or scratching. Hardness is purely a relative term and should not be confused with wear and abrasion resistance of plastics. For example, polystyrene has a high hardness but a poor abrasion resistance. Many tests have been devised to measure hardness. However, Rockwell and Durometer hardness tests are commonly used. The Rockwell hardness test measures the net increase in depth impression as the load on an indentor is increased from a fixed minor load to a major load and then returned to a minor load. The hardness numbers derived are just numbers without units. Rockwell hardness numbers in increasing order of hardness are R, L, M, E and K scales. ISO 2039-2 An International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard test method for determination of indention hardness of plastics by Rockwell tester using Rockwell M, L, and R hardness scales. The hardness number is derived from the net increase in the depth of impression as the load on a baU indenter is increased from a fixed minor load (98.07 N) to a major load and then returned to the minor load. This number consists of the number of scale divisions (each corresponding to 0.002 mm vertical movement of the indentor) and scale symbol. Rockwell scale vary depending on the diameter of the indentor and the major load.
