Rock gardens

What to do Some of the methods suggested for slugs (q.v.) may work for snails. Do not grow susceptible plants near locations such as rock gardens, walls, and wood piles, where snails hide. [Pg.338]

The family is represented primarily in the tropical and subtropical areas of both hemispheres and is important economically for its ornamentals, some especially for rock gardens. [Pg.98]

These low-growing, spreading plants are often used as groundcovers, in rock gardens, and as border edging few species grow over 1 tall. Rock cresses prefer soil on the dry side, cool temperatures, and full sun. White, pink, or rose flowers appear in early spring. [Pg.27]

Cotoneasters are alternate-leaved evergreen or deciduous shrubs with persistent red or black fruit. They are useful as groundcovers, in the rock garden, in foundation plantings, or overhanging a wall. [Pg.82]

Pines are needle-leaved, cone-bearing evergreens important both for their wood and ornamental value. In the landscape, some are useful as informal screens, others as hedges and foundation plants, and the more picturesque ones as specimens in the lawn or rock garden. [Pg.183]

Favored as rock garden plants, sedums endure poor, dry soil, but perform well in most well-drained soils. Full sun is best sedums tolerate some shade, but resulting stems will be weaker. Although drought-tolerant, sedums bloom better if watered regularly. Excess moisture encourages rots, especially in winter. Sedum stems and leaves form roots readily. [Pg.210]

Loose stone Crushed stone chips (top) in a variety of colors and textures—byproducts of the quarrying industry—make an acceptable alternative to quarried gravel or dredged gravel (bottom). A "scree garden" made with such chips or crushed brick waste is an effective way to display alpine plants, avoiding the environmental concerns caused by garden rock features (seep.134). [Pg.137]

The principles of the Continental style are easy to understand. Plants are chosen to suit the garden conditions. Depending on whether they originate from woodland, woodland margin, prairie, steppe, rocks, water margin, or water. [Pg.180]

Dr. Mills had a happy family life. He had two sons and a daughter, all grown-up now none of them have as yet followed him in a scientific career. His small garden was a showpiece at any time of the year, plants of some kind were flowering. He had an interest in, and a good knowledge of, plants and rocks but his main interest was in carbohydrate chemistry, and his work has had a substantial influence on this field. [Pg.8]

I was conscbus of the gardener s presence m the backg-ound, but Scarsdale was never sly about performing in fi ont of an audience. He rocked back on his heels so that he was bokirig at me down the length of his r se. [Pg.47]

Small 3" hydroponic plastic cups may be placed in the rooting tray and filled to just above the water line with lava rock, a porous kernel used in various hydroponic gardening processes. The seeds are placed on top of the lava rock, out of the water, and then are covered with another layer of lava rocks added to the cup. [Pg.15]
