DMPA is a preemergence soil herbicide which has been used in turf for the control of crab grass Digitaria spp.), and in soybeans, peas, beans and onions against grass weeds (Roberts et ai, 1966), but it has been superseded today. 

Humans are unable to synthesize thiamine, so they must obtain the vitamin from other sources in which it occurs naturally. The best sources of thiamine are brewer s yeast, whole grains, wheat germ, lean meats, organ meats (such as liver and kidney), fish, dried beans, soybeans, peas, nuts, green leafy vegetables, avocados, raisins, plums, and kelp. Thiamine is also made synthetically by a process that was first developed in the 1930s by American chemist Robert R. 

Useful specificity is shown by 4,6-dinitro-2-5 cbutylphenol (dinoseb), much used to eliminate dicotyledonous weeds from crops which are themselves dicotyledons, particularly peas and lucerne (alfalfa) (Roberts, 1954). The ionization and penetration of nitrophenols is discussed in Section 10.5.
