RKKY exchange interaction

Due to the weak influence of the CEF in this compound its magnetic structure is expected to be governed by the RKKY exchange interaction as well as the electronic structure... 

The model of localized magnetic moments with a RKKY exchange interaction is also used for the alloys and compounds of the lanthanide metals with nonmagnetic elements. The distinctive feature of such systems is the increase of the magnetic ordering temperature under pressure in most materials (see table 6). 

The canonical spin glass consists of a noble metal (Au, Ag, Cu, or Pt) diluted with a transition metal ion, such as Fe or Mn. The magnetic interaction in such systems is mediated by the conduction electrons, leading to an indirect exchange interaction—the RKKY (Ruderman and Kittel [70], Kasuya [71], and Yosida [72]) interaction, whose coupling constant J R) oscillates strongly with distance r between the spins as... 

The polarization of the conduction band due to the Hamiltonian of eq. (19) oscillates spatially with a long-range damping factor. The polarized conduction electrons can now scatter magnetically with another R atom. The resultant exchange interaction is known as the RKKY interaction and accounts for most of the magnetic properties of RI compounds. 

It was shown in section 3 that the transport properties of magnetic R-non-transition metal compounds can be understood in terms of a direct exchange interaction between conduction electrons and R localized moments. This interaction leads to an indirect RKKY interaction between the localized moments which describes the magnetic properties of these compounds.
