Republicanism shares with liberalism a concern for individual liberty, but that liberty is rather differently conceived as non-domination rather than as non-interference (Pettit, 2001, pp 138—144 Skinner, 1998), or as having a status as an independent person not subject to the arbitrary will of anyone else (Skinner, 2003). It is not, as in liberalism, primarily a matter of being able to exercise one s individual rights and liberties without interference.
