A process called transcription generates messenger RNAs (mRNA). A large enzyme, RNA polymerase II, functions as a catalyst to synthesize long chains of single-stranded ribonucleic acids in the presence of Mg2+ ions and the four rNTPs. It codes for proteins and occurs in almost all sizes. [Pg.37]

Ribonucleic Acid Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is a polymer consisting of nucleotides containing ribose and four different nucleotides adenine, guanine, cytosine, and uracil. Three main classes of RNA molecules are transcribed from DNA by three different types of RNA polymerases mRNA, tRNA and rRNA. Other RNA types are found in very small amounts including snRNAs, double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) and other non-coding RNAs such as the SRP RNAs. All RNA classes present in cells serve different functions. [Pg.98]

In like manner, ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) and transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) are synthesized from their specific genes through the action of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. And as in the case of mRNA, each of the precursor forms of these nucleotides are also processed until they reach their final forms. The rRNAs and a large variety of ribosomal proteins are assembled to form the ribosome. Ribosomes, the supramolecular structures in which protein synthesis takes place and which functionally resemble multienzyme complexes, are elaborate structures. They are attached, by a binding site on the smaller subribosomal particle, to the endoplasmic reticulum. The tRNAs that are synthesized finally become charged with specific amino acids. [Pg.174]
