At the point where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico, one of the largest deltas in the United States is still growing. Other large deltas include those formed in the Mediterranean Sea by the Nile, Rhone, Po, and Ebro Rivers, as well as those created where the Ganges-Brahmaputra River joins the Bay of Bengal, and where rivers empty into the South China Sea. [Pg.6]

The behavior of the Rhone is in no way exceptional. To take a North American example, the Mississippi is joined by the Missouri, the Ohio, and nnmerons smaller rivers along the route to the Gulf of Mexico, but it does not divide until it reaches its delta below New Orleans. These examples illustrate, therefore, how flows evolve if left to their own devices without the intervention of selection, whether natural or unnatural. [Pg.99]

The curved stripes of the western Delta correspond to successive positions of the same delta since the termination of the last glacial period. The former general shorelines are easy to see as well as ancient river courses. It is even possible to read, as an open book, the recent dynamism of this evolution, opposing the western delta, perfectly visible to the eastern section where the continuity is not affected by the cut offs seen along the present day shoreline of the part built by the Petit Rhone. The huge amount of mud carried by the Grand Rhone is shown by the growing eastern delta. [Pg.79]
